Powell Mansion (212 St. George Street) is located in the Annex neighbourhoud, just over two blocks north of Bloor Street on the west side of St. George Street.  The TTC is only a few minutes walk away as the Spadina and Bloor station with access to all directions is just around the corner.  The U of T campus begins just south of Bloor, with St. George continuing south past the Rotman School of Management, Innis College, Robarts Library and many more.  To the east is Yorkville and the incredible shopping of Bloor Street.

Originally a single family home, Powell Mansion was built in 1907 on what was then a residential only stretch of St. George Street.  In the mid 80s it was converted to a condominium building, with substantial structural changes made to the interior.    Some of the unusual renovations include the addition of a modern elevator as well as below ground parking.

Inside, the building has a mix of old and new, with the historic foyer remaining substanitally unaltered.  There are one and two bedroom units, ranging in size from 700 sf to over 1,000 sf.  A number of the units feature large balconies with views of the mature trees and historic homes in the area.  The amenities in the building include a gorgeous roof-top patio, dual saunas and an exercise room.

Note that while the building may retain most of its historic exterior, the units themselves are not unlike other condo units in terms of finishes and style.  In a nutshell, if you are looking for a condo unit with a historic, older style layout and finishes, Powell Mansion is likely not your best option.  That said, if you want modern updates in a historic building in a great location, it may be right up your alley.

From my perspective, unique buildings such as Powell Mansion are much more likely to remain a stable investment over the years.  After over 25 years operating as a condo corp, Powell Mansion is a stable, smooth running operation.  While maintenance fees in buildings always rise over time, an established building does not have the same jumps and leaps that new construction buildings have in their first few years.
